What would a "big tank" be? Gallon wise? Planning a 270 gallon, and I wanted to know if a sump would be good or just to have both?

I would do a decent sized sump myself. You have a lot more filtration options, and it would probably be cheaper than buying a couple FX5s or other canister. If you are going to build your own, a 75 gallon tank would work pretty well.

thanks. will do for the sump then! :)

but like those other people said. should we do both? canister and sump?

I am of the opinion that if you have a drilled tank with good overflows and a properly designed sump, the canister is not necessary. If you are really looking for additional water polishing, I think a good HOB filter (as much as I dislike them) like a Emperor 400 does a better job for the price.

I have a question about a sump .. I kno most of the things that it can do for a tank.. But my question is how does it fliter? Is it the prefliter i keep hearing people talk about. Im trying to decide what is the best choice for a new system because im upgrading from a 55 gallon to a 110 . So whats ur advice
