Ive recently maintained a decent planted tank for bit now and in the process of upgrading substrate i couldnt decide what substrate would be best for a low/moderate light tank, any suggestions?

Pool filter sand found at any local pool store (even lowe's /home depot has it.)

depends how much of that paper stack you wanna spend.

I personally wouldn't go with the stuff at lowes/HD... I think it doesn't look so great. At any pool supply store $10-$20 for a 50lb bag. I use one bag in 2 10g, a 30g, and a 20g long. THe finer grain size will help in root spread and anchoring.

You can also get some stuff call flourite, which is like gravel that has had nutrients added to it. Then again, you could get flourite sand, which is the best of both worlds.

There's also some stuff you can make call MSS (mineralized soil substrate). It involves of adding nutrients to plain old soil yourself. It takes a couple of weeks, but it's cool because you won't need to dose any ferts if you use it. Maybe some potassium potash every once in a while.

The choice is yours!

I base my substrate on the fish that must compliment it. Whats your stock?

Ive got 3 diamond tetras, 5 lemon tetras, 5 bloodfin tetra, 6 rasbora's and a baby severum
The plants i have arent all necessarily in the same lighting category but for now im going with the low/moderate lighting range.

I like the Flourite products. Ive purchsed Flourite original (very nice colors) and the Black and Black Sand. I think theyre great. And theyre only $12.99 a bag at my lfs!
