i bought one of these the other day to help clean the water on my 55. im a lil overstocked right now. i the carbon better or the polishing filter. or are there other ways or tips

yes, use the pillow stuffing filter pad or fluval polishing pad, and put a bad of fluval carbon and fluval amonia remover in. crystal clear homes

I LOVE HOT mags.. I have used (I hate to admit it) purigen as well with great results. Excellent at water polishing. I didn't care for the polishing filter. Less options.

You want some tips for the mag series? Oh I'll give you some tips alright, first of all don't waste your money buying carbon for the carbon container. It's a waste of money as you don't need carbon to keep a healthy tank. If you want clear water I would use the micron cartridge. If you want to have some use of the carbon cantainer I would fill that up with ceramic rings if you need more bio for your setup or sponge if you want mech but don't want to have to do maintenance every few weeks for the micron cartridge. There ain't much space for the media if your looking into using for bio so I wouldn't recommend using this as a solo filter. Oh don't forget to get the blue sleeves if you plan you plan to use the filter for extra bio.

I'm really surprised to hear people having success with these things. I got one with a tank setup once...it reminded me of an old Coleman lantern except it felt like it was made out of paper mâché. I never set it up because it felt so cheap and flimsy...anyway bud like people are saying, ditch the carbon use it as mechanical

These are really cool little filters.
I run 2 on my 55g.
One has the micron cartridge, the other the media basket, which is empty.
Sponge sleeve on each.
I have a spare micron cartridge so one is always available for use, while the other gets a bleach bath and then airs out for 5 days.
Gets the water crispy clean in my overstocked Mbuna tank.

I just bought my second Magnum HOT for a 40g, I use the 'polishing filter' for just that, ran it right after filling the tank, substrate of PoolFilter sand and Caribsea so the water was pretty dirty. After 2 hours running the Magnum it was crystal clear, swapped out the polishing filter for the media container filled with Eheim Substrat plus, slow fishless cycle over the next few weeks while I plant the heck out of the tank, then once the fish are in I rinse the sponge sleeve every couple of weeks and thats that, and so easy to change out media or clean without having to take it off the tank.

and so easy to change out media or clean without having to take it off the tank.

Now that is a trick I`d like to see.
Don`t know how you could pop the top off without removing the unit from the tank.

It's easy, you lift the locking lever/tab, pivot the locking bar to the back and then lift the top off, the HOB itself 'hangs' on a 'bracket' that is attached to the main body of the cannister. Then you remove the media holder or micron filter (whichever is being used), and clean/replace (while you're doing this you can hang the top on the side of the tank, intake/outlet tubes on the inside of the tank or you'll make a mess of your floor!).
