tips on hot magnum

agreed with the sans carbon bio philosophy
would add to run it into a bio-wheel for maximum filter goodness

For some reason I haven't been able to find the full "Magnum Pro" that comes with the Bio-Wheel, and Marineland don't sell the Bio-wheel as a separate unit, only the Powered Bio-wheel, a real PIA!

thanks everyone for your advice. i have the carbon setup in right now and its crystal clear. why doesnt anyone like carbon

Seems to be the general consensus that carbon only lasts for a couple of weeks then looses it's efficiency, good for removing chemicals/meds but bio media is better for bio filtration.

Carbon has been linked in some cases to hole in the head disease in fish (Oscars) and in general, a healthy tank doesn't need carbon to be healthy. It has its uses (medication removal and stank fish odors), but not for constant use.

Mechanical filtration (what I use my HOT for) and Bio filtration is what helps the tank the most. Look up the stickys on types of filtration and you'll understand the process better.

As I stated, my magnum is wrapped with polyfill and the blue sponge as an addition to a 90gallons filtration, purely set up for mechanical. It may not be as efficient as the micron filter, but I don't have to swap it out weekly to keep the flow up...I also use the inlet for heat with a stealth type heater that functions as a screen and hidden heater.

If this is your only form of filtration at the moment, fill the basket with Purigen (250ml or 500ml) and install the blue filter and leave it until the filter starts to clog, only cleaning the filter, I'd bet it'll last a month or 2!

Carbon on a tank that needs carbon uses up the carbon and exhausts the carbon
Carbon on a tank that doesn't need carbon doesn't need carbon so you throw away good carbon

Fix the problem, not the symptom

A lot of us use carbon to remove medications after a treatment is fishished
but the idea of constantly changing carbon as regular maintenance is outdated
