I might be moving to San Fran in 2 or 3 months from good ole NY and I was wondering if anyone had ever experienced moving with a tank? I have a 37 gallon currently with a pearl gourami, blue gourami and bichir. I plan on upgrading to a 70 in my new place but not immediately. Any tips on how to transport all of my live plants / 3 fish without everything being killed? I'd like to at least keep my plants and my fish alive, I'll dump my fluorite base if I have to.

Any suggestions are welcome even if they are expensive or crazy.

wow, that is gonna be quite the trek. I would say a large cooler with plenty of aeration. Also might want to take some of the tank water with you for the occasional water change as it will take you at least two days of driving.

Now what if driving wasn't an option

plantes get a bag with water to keep them frome drying out. They sell this porabetl air pumps at walmart work reall good.

Is there anyone you can give your fish to while you get set up in CA then have them overnight/2day them to you?

That sounds like your best bet, or just sell the fish an get new ones when you move.

Shipping your fish to yourself could be a HUGE cost depending on the size of the fish. I think you might want to consider selling the fish, upgrading to the bigger tank you wanted, then restocking again. Kinda sucks, but this would be the best option for the fish, and the least costly for you.

No offense, but you're moving to California. Get yourself some new fish. You can always replace those fishes with much better fish.

Okay so lets change the topic to the bichir alone as he is my biggest concern. It's about a 4 inch long baby ornate right now by the time I move I'm sure he will be at least 4 and a half inches.

I will have someone behind taking care while I'm setting up out there so shipping is possible, but how would shipping the bichir and some plants turn out? Anyone have any idea?

Has ANYONE shipped their personal aquatic pets anywhere before?

being that size it would not be "too" bad of a shipping cost. I have not personally shipped a fish, but I have ordered fish online and had them shipped to me. Just research the best way to have the fish setup in the box and then contact FEDEX (that's who i would recommend) about shipping cost. I would ship overnight though if you care about the ornate that much.

Shipping hardy fishes with the right technique is a piece of cake. All you need is some Kordon breathable bags, 6x sheets of styroforms, a box, and some newspaper. Try to use Fedex overnight. Again, the cost of shipping should run you about $40-50. Have you reconsidered just buying an ornate in Cali, ornates are a dime a dozen in Cali and very cheap.
