Tips on picking an oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I went through my Oscar phase, I looked at all my local stores and Petsmart had the best looking ones. I purchased two to grow out in my 210g. They both looked were very active and looked to be healthy fish. As they grew out one was obviously growing out weird and was a bit stunted and had digestive issues and had to be put down. The other grew very fast and looked nice. So my only real advice is the same as everyone else, look for active, healthy fish with nice patterning.

I always look for the dominate fish. But thats not what you need for what your planning. Just look for good body shape and active fish. I personally would just get a wild caught O.

+1 on having a close look at there mouths i see a lot of small oscars with mouth deformity's, there jaw structure seem week compared to other cichlids.

yep like everyone... Just look for a healthy active Oscar that has good shape. Healthy O should be super active and when you walk up the tank they should all be dancing round begging for food. Also its important to get a fish with markings u like. The marking do change as the grow so it cant be guaranteed it will look the same when its full grown but should be similar.

Go online and buy a wild caught. Less likely to get hith

I do actaully perfer the coloring of wild caught but I heard then tend to be more aggressive any truth to this?

It will be hit or miss, as with any fish. Oscars are not overly aggressive in general compared to most Americans their size. If anything I've heard wc oscars are more shy, but not too many people have wild oscars in the hobby.

Wild form is the choice. Love 'em

Don't wilds loose the distinctive color patterns and end up looking like tigers when they grow up?
