This last 2 months i have made an effort to save the electric bill going through the roof like it has been, since i have more and more tanks running. Below are a few tips to help others.

Fridge/Freezer- Turn them down, most of my freezers were set so high, they were giving things frost bite !

Dishwasher- I now have the kids washing the dishes in the sink after every meal. Before this we were running the dishwasher once a day.

AC/Heat- This is on a timer so that during work/school hours its just on standby, the 1st person to walk through the door will switch it on. Before this the AC was blasting away whilst nobody was home....made no sense ! I also dont have the AC running in the fish room anymore.

Aquarium Equipment- All 10 heaters are set at 74 degrees now instead of the usual 78 degrees. I also have 3 breeding tanks stacked on top of each other and was using 3 HOB's, now i have 3 sponge filters powered by just 1 pump. Im also using the pink styro sheets that ive painted and placed on top of the glass lids to keep heat in from the holes where filter inlet and outlet hoses go. At night i even place a towel over the tanks.

Lights/T.V's The kids have learnt that when going from one room to the next a light must be switched off in order to switch on a new light. Before, the kids would run from bedroom to dining room to kitchen to bathroom and then go and play outside for 2 hours and leave all the lights on and every T.V on in the house ! We have also changed all our bulbs to energy efficient type bulbs since they were on offer at HD 6 for $2 !

Just by doing these simple things we have saved $86 the 1st month of trying and $112 the 2nd month !
I am trying to bring the water cost now as its kind of fun to see how much you can save ! Ive started by watering the plants with old aquarium water. Before i used to throw it down the toilet and then fill the tanks back up and then a hour later get the garden hose and water the plants !

I hope this helps some of you, if you have any other tips then let me know !

oh and i almost forgot....

Aquarium lighting- Ive gone mainly hardscape now (except a few anubas and j.moss) so i have 2 single light fixtures running 3 hours a day. Before i had 6 light fixtures, 3 of which were dual, running for 7 hours a day !

Funny you say that about the Dish Washer... I too have just pulled the plug on it. I remember growing up having to wash everything by hand and now I'm seeing the new generation of "Just turn on the washer"... that was a light bulb for me!
As of last week, we only use the dish washer to store the wet dishes. Kind of ran off on a tangent Lol... just gave me more reason to not turn on the Dish Washer Lol.

One you can try is, take out the timer on the lights. Only turn them on by hand. In my case, Im to lazy to turn on and off every day just to see so I save instantly Lol. I do turn on daily for a short time while feeding then off goes the lights :)

It's all about the little things adding up!

Now, if only I could get my wife to turn off the lights going from one room to another...

Beside saving on your water bill, I find using rainwater in water changes sometimes stimulates breeding.

also check to see how much energy your pumps use. I'm going to be converting some of my big pumps over to ones that use less energy. also u would be surprised how much energy some small pumps use. do your homework before buying

Hello; Get a clothes drying rack and allow the wet clothes to air dry. I have been doing this for a while and hardly run the clothes dryer any more. The racks can be found that fold up.

Dont flush after EVERY PISS! Its a waste, i wait untill 3-4 pisses then flush, my gf doesnt mind either and it saves on the water bill!

Turn your hot water heater down
Florecent lite bulbs

If you have a lamp fixture that has multiple bulbs unscrew some

Unplug phone chargers, cpu chargers etc as they draw power all day when plugged in even if its not plugged into phone or cpu

Candles at nite

Solar power

Wind power

This may be propaganda, but I have heard this before
Save energy and water.

Thought you were efficient? A new ENERGY STAR qualified dishwasher uses less than half as much energy as washing dishes by hand and saves nearly 5,000 gallons of water a year!
Save the environment.

Because they use less energy, ENERGY STAR qualified products reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases caused by burning fossil fuels. By reducing water consumption, they also help protect our lakes, streams and oceans.

Hello; In the cool months I hand wash dishes and then allow the warm dishwater and rinse water to stand in the sink untill it cools to room temp before draining. This way the energy used to heat the water dissipates into the house. Same for bath water and old tank water. I let the tank water sit in a bucket untill it cools to room temp. I also wrapped my electric water heater and pipes with insulation.
