Beside saving on your water bill, I find using rainwater in water changes sometimes stimulates breeding.

Depends on where you live. Here in Colorado its actually illegal to collect rain water.

This may be propaganda, but I have heard this before
Save energy and water.

Thought you were efficient? A new ENERGY STAR qualified dishwasher uses less than half as much energy as washing dishes by hand and saves nearly 5,000 gallons of water a year!
Save the environment.

Because they use less energy, ENERGY STAR qualified products reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases caused by burning fossil fuels. By reducing water consumption, they also help protect our lakes, streams and oceans.

C'mon really? If that was the case, I would ride my bike to work and for fish runs all over the place... might as well sell my truck.
Side note (In general)- I never understood why little topics always take a turn to "save the enviorment." Thread's are simple, save energy and water= more $$ in the Bank*cough "Tank" Lol, lets stay on topic people. We all know thats the positive about changing our habits but the bottom line is we are trying to cut down on the monthly bills:D

My dishwasher is a 5 start and now its a 5 Star electricless dryer Lol. My electric kills me so I am looking for ways to cut back on that.

Great pointer about the Phone Chargers... I think I have like 5 connected at all times w/out the phones Lol. This will change today:headbang2

My bills used to be over $220-250 a month.

Since then I have:

Changed out all the light bulbs to use 7 watts each. In the bathroom there are 5 or 6 lights that turn on all at once, I have all the bulbs installed but only use one 7 watt bulb, down from 5 or 6 75 watt bulbs all at once and they are just as bright. I did this for my entire apartment.

Sold all my regular aquarium lights, they were consuming between 600-800 watts all together. Now I use LED, with 7 LED lights I now use 77 watts, BIG difference.

Sold all my FX5 filters and now only use Emperor 400s. I had 6 FX5s, now I have 10 Emperor 400s, not sure how much they use, I cant seem to find the wattage.

I now drain all the water out the window instead of the drain but apparently that doesnt matter because I get charged for sewer depending on my water usage.

Lights are always off from room to room when not in use.

Showers are short.

I turned down the hot water heater.

Dont use hot water when washing clothes.

I need to get a new dryer that is more efficient, that may be helpfull in lowering my bill.

I use a space blanket in the summer time on my sliding windows to reflect the heat so when the AC is on, its only on for a short period while I sleep, when I leave work the AC is off and by the time I get home 9-10 hours laters, my apt is still cool, plus Im on the bottom level.

I open the windows for cool air whenever possible and use a small fan to circulate the heat.

I run the ceiling fans in reverse to push the air down instead of up and then down. Since Im on the bottom floor this works well but not on the top floor. I did some temp testing at the temps were almost the same on the bottom, middle and top, but on the top floor, there was a major difference in temps.

I have a suge protector that I have on a lot of my appliances such as the microwave, when not in use I turn off the surge protector.

I have my heaters set to 79, I dont like a lower temp mainly because if ich and I have a ton of clown loachs and they get it very easily.

This was an awesome winter, it got down to only 17 degrees and I didnt have to use my heat, just used my blanket a few times when on the couch or dressed a little warmer.

I also have a deep freeze that I use for my deer, mounts, etc, but its empty now so I turned that off a few months ago.

Also turned down the fridge and freezer temps.

I rarely cook on the stove so thats an expense I dont have.

I need to start washing dishes by hand, have an old school dish washer and it washers FOREVER and uses HOT water.

I cant access the water heater so I cant put a blanket around it.

My bills are now $130 a month for a 500, 265, 220 and 125.

My son and my mother in law are my two biggest utility wasters so I try to get them to not run the faucet while teethbrushing, leave the lights off if there is adequate daylight coming in through the windows,at night, don't turn on one light just to go into another room.I rarely use my tank lights so I'm covered there as far as doing my part in the household lol.

dayummmm!!! Thats cool! Sounds like a lot of work but its paying off ;)

Hello; MasterB I have read that when it comes to washers and dryers that the washer has a bigger impact on power use. The reason given is that a washer that spins faster is supposed to remove more water thus there is less left to dry. Dryers are said to have similar power requirements for drying similar amounts of water. The stuff i read suggests that the washer is more likely to be a factor in laundry effeciency than the dryer.

Dont flush after EVERY PISS! Its a waste, i wait untill 3-4 pisses then flush, my gf doesnt mind either and it saves on the water bill!

Turn your hot water heater down
Florecent lite bulbs

If you have a lamp fixture that has multiple bulbs unscrew some

Unplug phone chargers, cpu chargers etc as they draw power all day when plugged in even if its not plugged into phone or cpu

Candles at nite

Solar power

Wind power

big turn off to see someone elses waste in the restroom, while using it. Imagine having to constantly avoid the splashback. not to mention the smell...yucks

Yea I am not a fan of the " If it's yellow let it mellow and if it's brown flush it down" mentality!!! I would rather see the boys go piss on the back fence then not flush the potty. Lol
