Tired of my funky, messed up tank!

I agree with the suggestions and cautions stated above.
Same here, some of the fish on your list are setting you up to potentially end up with the same issues and there are many options for nicer looking and/or more interesting fish.

From what I've seen, the SunSun filters get mixed reviews long term. Some people have issues (leaks, etc.) and some don't. It's similar with some of the similar looking filters out there. At least some of them are the same product under different names.

In my opinion, sumps vs other filter types is personal preference. Different filter types have advantages and disadvantages and I've seen plenty of people like and dislike sumps after having them.

anyone here use internal filters?
seems like nobody uses them?
I use HOB and sponge. Works great on one tank, but this tank is over stocked I think. I am slowly being talked into smaller fish.

I use internal sponge style media filters on most of my tanks up to 4ft, connected to power heads. Air driven sponges on the smaller or breeding tanks.
Benefit with the internal power head style is that you can adjust the flow rate, the direction and of course can see when the flow rate decreases indicating you need to clean the media. Many are available at varying prices although I find the basic models for a set flow rate perform adequately. Yes they may not last 10 yrs but the price means they can be replaced.
Best model I have found are aquael turbo range but you can build something similar for a fraction of the price.
