Tiretrack eel Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Krill, bloodworms, cut up shrimp, cut up smelt, earthworms, blackworms. If your tt is anything like mine, you are wasting your time with the pellets. Mine has never and never will touch a pellet. Anything meaty he attacks like it owes him money.

i'll swing by the local fishing store and pick up a dozen nightcrawlers for now and see how he does

i know he eats bloodworms

I've not had any luck with pellets, prepared food of any kind, even chunks raw fish / shrimp. Mine only takes live earthworms / red wrigglers.

Tough to feed him during the cold Canadian winters, so I had to start a worm farm downstairs.

Imagine how popular that makes me with my wife.....:grinno:

O

Ghost shrimp! Mine used to love live ghost shrimp, but yeah they sometimes will go quite a while while getting situated

It can be very difficult to get them to accept pellets though.
Actually I tried it last night just out of curiosity, and it actually did take one pellet from my hand, although once it realized it was a pellet and not a piece of krill, it wouldn't take any more, but I did feed it a few more pellets with krill wrapped around them, and it accepted those, so who knows, I could end up with a pellet-eating eel. :)

1) check ammonia, nitrite and nitrate along with ph, assuming all ok...

2) most eels are wild cAught and stressed, my advice is to start with live blood worm, then after a week or so use a turkey baster to target feed with frozen bloodworm mixed with live.

3) after a few weeks use frozen bloodworm from your hand

4) once feeding this way mix krill and other foods with the bloodworm

5) they soon get to recognise your hand with food and will take anything, do not underestimate what they can swallow, my fire eel at 12inches can eat a 3 inch smelt or chance fish or whole mussel.

Keep up large and frequent water. Changes.

Worms or night crawlers are also good but a shy or nervous eel will be put off by large prey with too much movement.

Picked up a TT yesterday. First eel.
He is eating bloodworms right off the bat, a little unsure about how much and how often to feed him though. opinions?

Feed once or twice a day until it is over 12", at which point you can start feeding it as few as 4-5 times per week if you want to. And feed it until it stops eating (which will be easier to do if you hand feed it).

Day two and I am already hand feeding him. He seems to have a great personality

I'm growing him out in a 30 gallon planted. Considering putting a few schoolers in there to keep the tank a little more active. Would some juvi clown loaches be a good choice to keep with him?
