If they are hiding all the times they are probably zig zag eels, they stay about 7-8" and are often sold as Tire Track Eels. Post some pics so we can ID them for you just in case.

I have to disagree, most spiny eel will like to hide from the tank. I have two 17 inch tiretrack eels. they always hide in the driftwood, the cave that i made from my bgk, and also in the filter. The most outgoing that I have heard are the fire eels.

Was referring to the burrowing in the gravel.

I was sold a tire track eel about a year ago. It is about 7 inches and has been 7 inches since I bought it. After doing some research my pet store ripped me off selling me a zig zag eel as a tire track eel. I didn't know the difference at the time. Now I do! I love my little eel but I was hoping it would get bigger. Here are 2 pictures of the differences between the tire track eel and the zig zag

I bet you have a zig zag like I do. Hope this helped.

mine stays burrowed all day and hasn't seem to grown at all either just give it food clean water and time

Mine is one of the variants of Mastacembelus Armatus the one posted above

Theres around 80 species of spiny eel many have a few common names and some have none

The problem with what people consider tire track eels is that theres around a dozen species that people would consider tire track eels which reach similar sizes on top of that there are many variations of patterns with individual species so this adds alot of confusion Mastacembelus armatus is what most people call a tire track eel/ zig zag eel but theres many other species sold as tire track eel

What most people call a zigzag eel is the smaller sized Macrognthus circumcinctus

So to put it simply theres alot of confusion between the species of spiny eels so to state the growth rate of a ( tire track eel ) would be difficult to do theres many sold as tire track eel so finding what species you have would play a big role in determining there growth rates there size and personalities
