What I'm trying to find out is how to cure it....I have uped the waterchanges, tried salt and melafix, and nothing has worked for over a months. Any suggestions??

my fire eel had one several months ago. he survived. :)
isolate him and treat with frequent water changes and melafix.
if he's eating, that's a good sign. that he's trying to fight the infection.

i dont check the net often so you might wana try PM-ing me if you wana ask me abt his recovery.
hope he makes it. :)

the hole is still not healing. i have never dealt w/ anything like this before...any other suggestions?

salt, melafix, and water changes are not helping at all.

the eel died today. :(

It appears that your eel has a bacteria problem.Bacterias like aeromonas will eat tissue in a ever widening circle.Remove the eel and clean out the wound with iodine to kill the bacteria. The wound then should scab over with white tissue and start to heal in a day or two.If the sore remains red the bacteria is still active and the wound needs to be recleaned.Adding a gram negitive bacterial agent may help.
