what do your hybrids prefer for food?
my hybrids sumhow ONLY eat hikari pellets (either massivores or floating spirulina LARGE pellets) they havent tried to eat any of the dead fish yet like the gars. But i guess thats not such a bad thing cuz pellets are easy to feed :)

I have also seen in Berlin a big tank with twoe wels around 1,50 m, some sturgeons and big pikes, and they did well too. I think this can work if the wels have always enough to eat, but I also read in german forums about people who had smaller wels in their tanks, that they ate or attacked other fish.
Just look at this video, I suppose the fish the wels eats were to feed it, but I suppose it would do the same with other fish too:

A further problem is that a wels which is kept in a big pond in tropical climate would probably show never-seen fast growth. Even in the warm regions of Italy and Spain where thy were introduced they have to slow down their metabolisms during winter, but in a region where they can eat and maintain a high metabolism, they could probably reach a length of 1,5 m + in a really short time, i.e. within some years.
anyways yeh no point arguing cuz i havent even seen a wels for sale in malaysia lol. but im not really worried about my RTCs...they r pretty hardcore...i wud be more worried about my baby arows that i plan on putting in my pond by the end of the year. they wud definitely not be safe.

Plus i have no space to growout a wels cuz my 400 gal tank is occupied by silver, jars and green arowanas which will take ages to reach pond-worthy size. :)

Yes, I suppose this is the main point, you will hardly get a wels anyway. But it would be really great to see what would happen if they can grow during the full year. I have once read the abstract of a scientific paper which showed that farmed wels in France showed much better growth when their ponds were heated to a distinct degree during winter.

Satans Goldfish, post pics of the wels in the aquarium pls!

I'm sure i'll be back there later this summer, they have a whole 'Waifs and strays' sections with tropical fish that have out grown peoples tanks. It's mostly Black Pacu's and Pangasius Catfish.

Lucky S.O.B! :ROFL:Mine mostly like hikari masivore delite but that stuff costs a fortune over here and they show no interest in floating pellets.

LOL its kinda funny seeing them eat hikari floating pellets tho....cuz they r so blind...they basically use their whiskers and feel out the vibrations so i have to throw it hard directly in front of them and they charge as if they are hunting live fish.

I dunno, a lot of people have pools there. My cousin has a good sized pond at his too, full of koi tho, i may have to re-educate him.

The pond price is one thing. the fish price is another one ... from what i gather the fish that TL has carry quite a high price tag back in Ozland - some of them are actually quite affordable (cheap?) over in Asia (not in Australia though e.g. silver aro)

Errr, TL, it is time for that update again, mate ^^
