Im considering going bare bottom

any drawbacks to a bare bottom tank tank? besides looking very plain.

how well do bare bottoms do during a power outage? since they have no subsrate to hold bacteria??

i know the benifits are cleaner water and less maintance.

i hear some opinions say, that its cruel keepnig a fish in an unnatural emvironment, personaly i really think fish dont give a ****, all they need it room to swim and places to hide if their fish like loaches, and certain catfish and afew other fish, alsos i think the ONLY thing on a fishes mind is FOOD!!! :naughty:

just my 2 cents, right their.

NOTHIN DIFRENT BESIDESEASE OF MAINTNCE AND PLAINESS
dam caps

anyway you can still got big rocks and make caves and such

the bacteria will build up on the glass and if you got enuf filtration and the tanks establiushed shouldnt have anyproblems .

most of my tanks are bare bottomed.. and we often have power outages here in the phils.. but i have never lost any fish from power outages so i'm sure bare bottoms hold well in them.. what i do is paint the bottom either black or blue, it looks better than the mirror effect of non painted ones

as long as you've got a good well-established biological filter, i say go for it! You will see the BIG difference in maintanence... (water changes, gravel vaccin', water clarity, etc.) GL! ;)

all i can say is you will save so much time during your maintence plus you can see and scoop out stuff through feeding to keep the water clearer.

if you already have substrates, i would not take them all out at once just as a precaution but little by little since you are taking away some of the benefical bacteria.

enjoy your extra free time...

I only have one bare bottom tank, for my feeders, I thinking about doing a second to raise smaller fish to add into my big tank.

I have two bare bottom tanks, work well. There are some fish I would not do it with because the waste would show up so well...like oscar, don't need to see rabbit crap sized turds laying on the bottom. As for it being cruel. I don't think it is depending on the species. Something like gars or arowanas don't really care. Some catfish, rays, loaches and digging cichlids might feel a bit weird in a tank no gravel and just their reflection.
