May not be as much a problem in some parts of the US, but over here it would be more expensive to keep a glass tank heated than to keep a wooden/plastic viv, or a rack system. I'm not sure why you wouldn't use a plastic (herptek/vision etc-not because of price, just the principles) over a glass tank. You have more control over ventilation, and being able to hold humidity better as well holding heat. Also some species would prefer just one glass side (or none with rack systems) for there sense of security. Even if glass tanks are adaquate, i can't think of any pros over others, although they do have cons.

well.... since some of you seem to think that it's impossible to make a screen top that's escape-proof... ..have a gander.

this weighs 25 lbs and fits SNUGLY on the top of my 48"x18" tank...

..mind you Doom is just a baby, but even I have a *little* trouble lifting it off because of the fit..

the screen part is 1/2"x13 expanded metal and the frame it's welded to is 3/16ths angle iron cannibalized from an old tank stand I built.

if anyone wants something like this or a stand built, get ahold of me.. I ship/freight across the globe.

There's a significant difference between a ball python and a larger species like a BCI, retic, or burmese python. In fact, I'd probably put my money on the BCI since they're more muscular than a similar-sized python.

oh I'm sure there is.. we're talking about twice the difference of length? ..I tell you what.. I'll guarantee this. If you want a screen your snake can't lift, I'll build it. You will need at least another person to help you lift, and don't complain about the freight costs :D ..and I can make cages out of expanded metal too.. and I can put latching doors on these screens as well. I own/run a metal shop and we fabricate custom stuff for all kinds of people.

The screen looks great but can you explain to me just exactly how it holds in humidity?

the clear plexi that I removed in order to fully display the expanded metal :D ..covers about 2/3rds of the screen.

Good idea! Much cleaner looking than having towels and what not on top. Did you put anything on the metal to keep it from rusting?
I would still be willing to bet that my girl could pop that top right off. :)

well.. I'd just have to make a girlproof lid :D ..I haven't treated it yet.. it's still got the mill scale and all that on it.. like I said, the frame part is cannibalized from an old tank stand, so I really haven't finished the work.. I have some grinding and whatnot.. a few more welds.. going to mount a few small hooks to hang the light from, adding a latched door on the top so I don't have to remove it..

I guess this could be considered a habitat conversion lid.. it's possible to fasten it in place with silicone y'know.. ...I could turn the entire tank on its side and make it like one of those rack boxes.. possibilities are endless..

but back to the main point.. I'm going to mediablasting and powdercoat. Powdercoat is my favorite.. there are other chemical treatments like "antique black" which gives that typical flat colored wrought iron look.. parkerizing, which gives it kind of a military appeal.. ..chrome.. paint sucks if you ask me. it's too messy and it never turns out the way I really want it. ...unless I'm airbrushing.. ..and then of course there's clearcoat.. which leaves all the swirls and whatever you do with sanders.. ..possibilities are endless.
