Well I have decided to get myself an early Christmas gift and I decided that I will get myself a road bike. Now I am a total newbie with road bikes. I will mainly use the bike to ride to work. Now my ride won't be short, its about 15 miles (one way) and I know for a fact that I can do it and if I can't do it, I will push myself to do it.

Now the question is which road bike is a good buy for a newbie like me? I know that this is the best time to buy a bike since most LBS are looking to clear their floor for next year's models. Budget wise, I am NOT looking to spend over $800. Why $800? Because I am setting aside $200 for other expenses such as helmet, shoes, pedals, clothing, etc...

I also will have another use for the bike which is for short triathlons (crossing fingers)...

I have recently set a 3 month goal upon myself and I decided that I will run a half marathon in February. I have been religiously cross training for the past 4 weeks. I have been running 6.5 miles constantly under one hour on T, Th, swimming 30 laps on F, and running 6.5 miles and doing the cycling class on Sat.

I will do a short triathlon on Dec 13, 3.11mi run, 15mi bike, 150m swim. Tiny steps for now...

I've never been this disciplined ever! :D:headbang2

cyclists = cycling

motorcycles = motorcycling???

It doesn't make sense huh?

look into something like this as it has class and speed.

I guess this thread is futile. Time to close the thread I guess.

LOL! Speed and Class!!!!

Seriously though, I got one of the Novara Buzz models of bikes. I don't know what is available in the Philippines though. I like it. It's my first road bike, I also have a BMX bike. I got it to commute to work. It was ~ 470 USD. It is by no means a luxury or top of the line bike, but it is really well built, sturdy, and reliable. It has three gear shifts on the left, and eight on the right, its flat bar instead of drop, no suspension, but it does have plastic(cheap, light) fenders which is nice here in Western Washington with the rain.

Have you decided on a brand? The leading brands of premium bikes are TREK, SPECIALIZED, GIANT, RALIEGH, FUJI and there are more. I'm a TREK rider. I also have a SPECIALIZED mountain bike. Go to the websites of these bike manufacturers and look at the various models. Bike manufacturers are good about posting prices on their sites. They don't try to hide their prices. Lance Armstrong endorses TREK and has a bike that goes for over $6K. $800 will get you a nice road bike, right at or possibly just above the beginner's model. You're right, lbs are going to offer you a good price. But go to the websites and check out their MSSR prices, so that you know what you should be paying and you know where to start your negotiations. Good luck.
