in the river
what filters have you used and had the best results with...i have two western painted's in a 55gal and im running and emperor400 on one side and a penguin sumthing (made for 50ga tanks) and i still change water every week...i think its cause im not using filters that reach to the gravel their intake slots are at mid tank level when most the turtles waste and debri is at the bottom...so what would be a good filtration system to use ona 55gal to help keep the mess on the bottom under control. thanks all.

I have an Emperor 400 on my Jag's 55 gallon tank and it does a good job. You could get a syphon and suck up the turtle waste as soon has you see it. That would help with your tank a lot.

Hey dude
I 've kept turtles - and man, are they MESSY!

I had a 100 gallon "long" with about 10 adult snapping turtles (Quite a stunning show!) and had to do a 75 percent water change DAILY. This INCLUDED two Aquaclear 500's (The big ones)
There's just no way around water changes with turtles.

Okay, so the above tank had 10 turtles... but even with just a few turtles, they produce exorbitant amounts of waste that a filter just can't keep up.
The only time I see CLEAN turtle water is if there is a pond, or a huge tank, with one, or maybe two, turtles in it.

You shouldn't use gravel in a turtle tank. Always use a substrate that has larger particles than the turtle's head. I have had turtles ingest the gravel and they can die from the impaction. Use something like polished river rocks, it has larger spaces and the gaps should allow for better movement of debris.

i do syphon once a week...and idk it just seems to be really messy for only
(2) 2.5-3" westerns...i was expecting this when they are adults but not now...

ever think about going bare bottom or large river rocks?
