To azul or not to azul

My azuls were very much like Pleco's at that size. They are little bigger now. What is the reason for difference between Pleco's and what isde02 has posted? Is it the collection point? If so what are the two collections points we are referring to? Thanks.

Ahh dang, seen "West" and was hoping my LFS could talk to your LFS and they could learn how to get quality fish in stock.

Those are good looking Azul. If they are a decent price, and you got room, I'd grab them and save them from somebody who's gonna try to house them in a 100g tank.

I don't know for certain that collection point is the difference but it is imo. There are many different collection points of azuls out there: Matto Grosso, Sao Francisco, Tocantins, Minas Gerais, Araguaia, and also Azul sp. brejinho de nazare. My azuls went through a bit of a dark stage but not nearly as dark as yours....here is the darkest that they got.

I have a Tocantins and Araguaia Azul, both look like the OP's first pic. They are both juvies too. Seems like they are almost identical in characteristics at that size. Hard to tell from that pic what it really is, but I've noticed a lot of Tocantins going around so more likely that's what it is. The first pic is my Tocantins, the second is the Araguaia. uploadfromtaptalk1402503466095.jpguploadfromtaptalk1402503494764.jpg

they seem to look closer to the second pic, what threw me off I was used to seeing more blue in the anal fin

They're still small yet 5 to 6 inches only. The blue is coming in on the tail fin, but I believe the red stays around until they're about 12 inches or more.

Yeah, I guess you are right. Blue is starting on the base of anal & tail fins of my azuls too and is starting to spread in to rest of the fin. I guess blue will take over when they are around 12".
