hello everyone,i have a 55 gallon with one 10 in oscar in it.im running 2 emp. 400 power filters that are doing a good job so far.with my economic stim. i was wondering if i should get a canister.my filters are doing a good job so far but i dont know if they will do the job when he get full grown.i shouldnt even have to say how messy he is now.....so should i get one..if so what size and should i still run my power filters with it.my fam alway used fulval but ive heard rena's are good as well.what do you think?

IMO "If it ain't broken, don't fix it" but if you are getting a canister I would recommend the Rena xP3 and Eheim 2217, more so for the Eheim 2217 now given the price on the Rena xP3 nowadays. It won't hurt to keep running your power filters at the same time. If you want to remove the power filters completely you will need to give the canister some time to be seeded with beneficial bacteria, gradually remove the power filter media in this case.

yeah listen to wildfya and when your done you will be broke...you like to recommend the more expensive things in the hobby huh? cascades, renas, fluvals, which are all cheaper will do just as good a job.

yep, agreed. no need for overkill. if ur filters works fine rite now, just leave 'em be. but if u do decide to go 4 a canister, i recommend Marineland c-260. it's a very well designed filter, and very well priced. and marineland has an awesome customer service.

If ya are gonna contest wyldfya's advise at least know what your talking about. I would like for you to come up with a better filter for the money then the eheim 2217.

BTW you can get the 2217 with media for about 120 bucks

Good luck in your quest:ROFL:

i'd add a canister power filters provide alot of mechanical but only some chemical filtration and not to much bio filtration canisters provide alot of bio filtration and and usually a good amount of chemical filtration bio filtration is very important with large cichlids

eheim is alot cheaper but if you go for the Rena get a Xp3 much better deal the Xp2 doesn't have much room for media and the Xp1 doesn't have any at all

I say if you have a single specimen tank and its only 55 gal with two emp.400s that are rated for upto 80gal each. You should be fine with that alone.

Now that being said I still do sugest getting a good canister with that money. If for no other readon then to get it seeded for another tank in the future. But I like the FX5s b/c they kick some MAJOR *** in the mecanical filtration department.
