to clean or not to clean

I have boiled a few rocks in my time with no issues, if you can't boil then I would probly scrub the rocks really well and then dip them in a 10% bleach soloution and then soak them in heavy water conditioned water. Or pour lots of boiling water over the stones.

Boiling can be dangerous. Too much pressure can cause the rocks to explode. Simply rinse them under hot water but not boiling water.

I was thinking the same too. stick them in a bucket or rubber maid type thingy and add a strong dose of tank dechlorinator, or even use baby steralizing tablets. BTW its never a good idea to use rocks that are porous as they can hide a multitude of sins.

I always bleach and boil stones for my tanks. If they are to big to boil, the I will still scrub with bleach water, then pour lots of boiling water over them to rinse. Or I will fill the bathtub up with the hottest water possible soak drain and repeat several times. I do this even with stone purchased from the LFS or a garden shop.
