To discus or not to discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
260 long 122 tall 24 wide

Thanks! I'd recommend putting some extra effort into vaccuming if you do get discus.
(As you probably already know), given their sensitivity to bad water, big appetite for meaty food, resultant messiness, and warm water requirements which rot uneaten food and foul the water fast, they need frequent vacuuming of the bottom.
However, this may not be easy to do if you have a 122 cm tall tank, so you'll likely have to put some extra elbow grease into it.
Good luck!

Since its the crushed coral that probably brings your pH up to almost 8 (?), (perfect for rift lake fish) your regular tap pH seems perfect on its own for discus.
If it were me, the only thing I'd try to add, are some tannins using either rooibos tea, peat moss, sunken wood, or leaf litter.

A lot of tank bred/raised discus will do fine in higher pH water and even a few wild discus from certain locations see pH up to 7.8, but there's not much point to higher pH water if your tap water is stable at closer to neutral pH. Healthy discus from a good source are neither as easy as African cichlids nor as difficult as some people make them out to be-- that is if you don't go nuts feeding beef heart, overfeeding protein, etc. Can you do feed like that? Sure, people do, but that's why they have to do so many water changes, etc. etc.

Beautiful tank, despite the fake coral in freshwater and, great username lol!

Yeah well I bought the tank used it’s an old ATM tank and was originally saltwater.so the scenery is all one piece and I didn’t want to cut it up to get it out. As for the username it’s what I’ve always used from way back when Xbox live started

I don't blame you,on both points.

So next question. What’s your thoughts on stocking numbers ? I’ve read the more the merrier as the aggressions are spread out more. Any thoughts

As many as you can fit without overstocking and while making room for tankmates (if there are any you want) is the way to go, when it comes to fish like that.

I'd recommend running tankmates+as many discus as can fit through AqAdvisor (plug in your tank dimensions first).
