I have a large mix cichlid tank and I am haveing a problem with Tiny particles floating around in the water. I have macanical filtration in the form of sponges I think they are 40 PPI and I run filter floss in a reactor. I have a lot of water flow, the turn over rate is over 10 times the tank volume. The next thing I'm gonna try is floculence but wanted to ask on hear of there is a better way, as I don't like to add chemicals to the water if I don't have to. I have tried to clean the macanical filtration everyday for over a week to see if it would get better but it did not.

Ok there were some questions but no answers. I am about to give up my tank is cloudy and i can not get it clear. I just tried seachem water clarifier and it did not help. I have a 20 ppi sponge as my macanical filtration. Maybe I need to go to a finer one? I know when I had my sump up I would clog two 7 inch 300 micron filter socks in about 2 hours so I know I have a lot of particles in the water but now that I am using the 5 gallon buckets it dose not get fully cloged anymore.it should not be this hard to get the water clear.

I use a pool DE (Diatomatious Earth) filter on my dirt bottom heavily planted 180g tank and have perfectly clear water 24x365. There is a link to a thread in my signature.
What size do you have? My tank is 600 gallon with 500 gallon sump. I think I might try this. What are the down sides? Do you run it 24/7? How long dose it last before you need to clean it?

You really are having a hard time with this water issue aren't you? I think I replied, along with others, to your other threads. Obviously nothing's worked for you thus far.

One thing that has just alerted me is the size of your sump. That is huge, and I suspect something you don't clean that regularly simply because of the size of the thing. Could it be that down in your sump is a load of old mulm that is continually being blown about by the circulation, and that it is this mulm that is causing the constant particulate in your water column?

Yes, your mech filter will collect some of it but if there is particulate being disturbed AFTER your mech, then that particulate will forever cause you a problem, as you are finding out.

Just an idea. It really shouldn't be that difficult to solve this problem.
