To many water changes create algae?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive been doing my water straight up. have been doing it like that for years no problem. Today when im out im getting soem water treatment and going to start using it.

Ok so this is what you need to do:

1) DO NOT STOP OR SLOW WATER CHANGES. Yeah, you might not have had this problem, but that is not the right solution. Fish need to be able to live in clean water, and water changes are how that happens.
2) Test your tank water and tap water for BOTH nitrates and phosphate. Post the results and that will give some insight here. Yes, nitrates in tap, it happens to a lot of people. I had a friend in arkansas who was getting 8-15ppm of nitrates in his tap!
3) Reduce/eliminate lighting for a while and see if that helps out. If you have plants and can't eliminate lighting for a while, just reduce it to 5 or 6 hours a day, tops.

I honestly try to stay out of my tanks. The best tanks and the cleanest tanks ive owned are the ones I neglect lmao. Im having the same issue with fogging in my 180. My tank is a white fog. Green in the bucked when I do water changes. NEVER had this problem before untill I started doign 2x a week 20% water changes... My exedon tank i set up 7 months ago... done maybe one water change on it, running an older HOB filter i found in my closet... Fish are healthy as crap and water is crystal clear...
... these are bad choices. Nitrates = poison. It's as simple as that. You are letting them build up to what I would assume is way too high. You need to focus on tank cleanliness and fish health and forget about how ugly algae is for a while.
