hi i was wondering if there is such a thing as to much carbon filtration, and if so what r the effects?
thanks for the help!

I use carbon myself, but I believe those that don't use carbon use bio-media as well as mechanical filtration (filter floss/pads). I've been wondering about getting rid of carbon myself and what I'd need. I run carbon and bio-media over filter pads.

I don't use it unless I've used meds on a tank.
I run 2 HOBs that have nothing but a bio-wheels on it and a canister that is for bio and mech. No chemical filtration for me.

I have never used carbon. I don't think it is necessary, and I think most hobbyists would agree.

I don't think you could use too much either though, unless you are using up so much space with it that you don't have enough mechanical and bio.

I do use Seachem Purigen....I dont know what kind of work its actually doing...but my tank is cyrstal clear...and it is completely reusable! Just needs to be cleaned when it turns dark brown. I dont use carbon unless I am clearing meds out...I agree that it isnt nessecary.

I have 2 Magnum 350 canister filters on my 150. I don't have any carbon in my filters. Where the carbon would go, I put a bunch of Fluvel ceramic rings. I've had it this way for 3 years now.

Do you have any other form of bio filtration? I was always under the impression that the magnums werent set up for bio something to do with the water flow rate...

Nope, all I use are the ceramic rings. The design of the Magnums is good in the respect that the filter forces all the water to pass through the media. The only complaint I have about the filter is that the media basket/container doesn't hold up very well. The plastic mesh screen constantly pops out of place and is very difficult to put back.

I think any decent canister can be set up for bio-filtration by using ceramic rings in place of carbon. Some filters have room for multiple media, the magnums only have room for one. I just stuffed the container full of of rings.
