There is no need for it unless you put meds in the water. If the water is not clear enough, than you need to boost up the turnover rate, or do larger water changes. By not using carbon, you will save enough money to buy an other filter.
I use carbon. I find it works well and I don't think you could possibly have too much. Though planted tanks do better without it sometimes and the plants will do the work of the carbon anyway. If you have a sump you can grow plants in it and save the carbon for something else.
