I'm Over Here Now
i posted in the general discussion with this question with no helpful answers. i set up 2 fx5s for my 220g. one is just biomax in all 3 trays to house BB only. the second i set up for a mechinacial filter with a pad and carbon in all 3 trays. i used my own socks and filled them with about 40 ounces of carbon. my question is is there such thing as to much carbon that may harm the fish?

No, it will not harm your fish. IMO I think your wasting a lot of space in your filters using carbon in all 3 trays though. A lot of people don't even use carbon. If your set on running carbon, I would only run it in 1 tray and use the others for more bio filtration. Whats your stock list for your 220G.

i have
1- 7" leo stingray
1- 6" tig
4- 4" indo dats
1- 4" jardini aro

the reason i'm using so much carbon is that my driftwoods still leaching. this cleared up within an hour with this meathod. the second fx5 has nothing but
bio media

Yeah, your fine if you want to run that much carbon. It won't do any harm to the fish and your water should be crystal clear. Me personally, once your driftwood is no longer leaching I would use less carbon and add more media for bio filtration. Not that you don't have enough to support your system already. I would just rather have extra bio filtration over chemical filtration. It's all personal preference really.

i agree with you on the extra bio. just wanted to know if that much would be toxic or harmful. tanks well under stocked till these guys fill out

Did you boil your driftwood before putting it into the tank? I was having an issue with leaching as well, then I took it out soaked it in boiling water which seemed to make the leeching go quicker.

Another thing you might look at is purigen as i believe it removes impurities from the water, and is reusable.

is it true that after a time carbon will release the impurities back into the water is this true??or is it just a wifes tail so we buy more than we should.

That sounds like a very valid reason to run carbon. I wouldn't worry about any amount of carbon being dangerous to my fish. Some people (weirdo's?) actually eat powdered activated carbon... not something I am into though. I would guess that your activated carbon will be pretty well petered out after 6 months and no longer providing much filtration. At that point I think I would switch to another media.

the driftwood is way to big to boil. i tried to get large barrels to boil them in, but their just too big. so no i have not boiled them. they are cypress swamp wood. anyone ever use this that can tell me how long this usually takes to quit leaching???
