I have 2 oscars, 1 jack dempsey, 3 tinfoil barbs, 1 pleco, and 1 freshwater moray eel in a 125 gallon tank. Im getting a cf-400uv canister filter soon. My question is, would it be okay if I added a gar? Im not sure what species it is, I believe its a florida gar.

The eel doesn't belong in a freshwater tank. The cichlid species are pretty passive, i don't think it would be disastrous to add the gar IMO

The eel is fine in the tank.... It prolly swam up a creek or somethin and got caught... Bet u paid a pretty penny for it but ita fine because of its like salt bladder or whatever... Just like a bull shark it holds all the salt it needs in its lil salt thing I cant member what ots called but I saw it on monster fish keepers freshwater shark... And my lfs has a eel aro and clown knife in freshwater with no problems so ur eel woll be fine

Even those those aren't overly aggressive cichlids they can still result in a broken back for the gar if they decide to bully it. I've also seen what "passive" cichlids can do to other fish. At a LFS the had some florida gars in with cichlids which proceeded to nip all there fins off.

There is also still the problem of the tinfoils. Being silver there is an increased chance of the gar attacking them. As well their skittish nature can freak out a gar and cause a broken back. Lastly the pleco could potentially suckon the gar, which can quickly lead to death for the gar.

As well, eel should be in brackish to marine conditions as most of the other posters have said.

IMO and through experience i havent had a problem with keeping a large gar with cichlids. If you put a 5" gar with equal or larger cichlids then that would not be a good idea. You want the gar and the fish to be large. Example in my 125g i have a 11"gar with cichlids between 4-12" and i have had no problem. Including oscars, midas, ect
