To much for one tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The eel is fine in the tank.... It prolly swam up a creek or somethin and got caught... Bet u paid a pretty penny for it but ita fine because of its like salt bladder or whatever... Just like a bull shark it holds all the salt it needs in its lil salt thing I cant member what ots called but I saw it on monster fish keepers freshwater shark... And my lfs has a eel aro and clown knife in freshwater with no problems so ur eel woll be fine

You are incorrect. The freshwater moray common in the hobby, Gymnothorax tile, is in fact at minimum to be kept in brackish, but preferably marine. It will not do well in pure freshwater, these are not the same as bull shark that live in fw lakes....these are eels that do occur in coastal fw/brackish areas, but will mature into saltwater animals...use the search, plenty of info out there on these

I knoe for a fact(personal experience) that a snowflake/ moray eel will not do good in pure freshwater I had one for 3 months didn eat one time ppl think they eat cuz they can go with out food for months he will not eat unless it's salt or brackish water... I learned the hard way spend $30 on a FRESHwater eel which is bs it's brackish so I'd sell it while it's still worth something

IMO and through experience i havent had a problem with keeping a large gar with cichlids. If you put a 5" gar with equal or larger cichlids then that would not be a good idea. You want the gar and the fish to be large. Example in my 125g i have a 11"gar with cichlids between 4-12" and i have had no problem. Including oscars, midas, ect

This is very much not the norm for how these combos go. How long has this been together? My guess not that long since a 11" gar should still be in it's first year. Some combos are only temporary at best.

Ive had the gar for one year almost maybe less. It only eats fish under 3" or so and hes big enough that the other fish dont mess with him. I would agree this isnt the norm or recommended im just sharing my experience.

My .2 about the freshwater moray eel... Gymnothorax tile will "survive" technically in freshwater but ive kept them in both fresh and full marine and i will tell you its an entirely different eel in sw. Ive kept these eels on and off in multiple environments with different tank mates and the best ive seen one is in full marine. In fw they dont thrive they eat only to survive if you can get it out os its slump to eat and most people keep these with cichlids which are wayyy to much competition for food. This eel does best target fed. In fw it just doesnt show the energy or drive. Most cichlids will pick on it and for those trying to keep it in community tanks will learn it is to shy to eat of a stick ir forage for the food you WANT it to eat and eventually when it does get hungry you will start missing small fish. In brackish to salt this fish will be alot more active show more drive and grow and thrive better.
