salt is natural in all freshwater except ro or deionized water. it does help gill function and help prevent stress and stress caused illnesses. i have seen it help many more times then i have ever heard or it hurting (when used at the proper rateings). many people dont understand that once added you dont add salt to topoff water only when you do water changes. Cichlids are great example of how proper salt and salt level can be huge. Once i started adding a specific salt for cichlids my cichilds looked like they were plugged in. i was adding normal aquaium salt but switching to a salt made for cichlids made a HUGE difference not only color but overall health was far far greater. ph was easier to keep level and so on...
