To Salt QT or Not?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with Duane, with one possible exception. I generally add a tsp or two of kosher salt to the tank to help alleviate any osmoregulatory stress that the new fish are typically under when they arrive. I also drop & plop in tank, I never drip.

After 24 hours in the shipping bag I move quickly, adding a little water from the tank right away and transferring them as soon as temp is close.

Awesome. Thanks! Is it an old wives tail that when the bag is opened and meets fresh air it turns the existing water to ammonia?

Within 24 hours in the bag, the fish have been constantly urinating (they do thru gills) albeit because of the darkness, metabolism has slowed a bit (and I know Wet Spot does not feed a day or so before shipping, to help purge the gut) so obviously ammonia is already there.
I'm also very careful to watch for signs of worms during quarantine time, especially on wild caught fish

Plop and drop into a slightly warmer tank?

I've never been overly concerned with temp, unless it is way off. But yes, a little warmer is typically better than a little cooler than the bag temp.
