the thing that has me wondering is this:

if you do some researching on glasscages, from what I understand there are a lot of happy people, and a whole bunch that have had big tanks break/fail..eg. check out some of the reef forums..lots of problems with the saltwater people..

could it be that their own advice about the foam is the reason for the failures?

that is if the foam = possible cracked bottom may be true..

I could definitely see that a "bad" piece of foam might cause an inconsistency in the tank bottom causing it to crack. Very interesting argument against foam.

I'm surpised they suggested 3/4" foam... I typically use 1/4" and typically see others using 1/4~1/2"...

I am surprised at glasscages.

I did a search on them and I could not believe the negative experiences out there. holy smokes.

I had heard about some bad experiences, but wasn't expecting anything like stuff that I found..wow.

one guy's wife ending up crying her eyes out because of the bad customer service, the husband got mad.. they got mad..etc..

:screwy:

I was looking at glasscages site on the web and the pics of their tanks show that they do NOT use the braced design on the bottom of their tanks..which is probably why they recommend foam.

the design is just like an acrylic tank on the bottom - no floating bottom. hence, likely why they recommend using the foam.
