Fellow MFKer's I need your wisdom. I have a 180g reef ready tank that I am in the process of setting up. I needed to rip out the overflows in order to clean them... yes they were that filthy and the person I bought the tank from siliconed in the bulkheads. I have a FX5 and 2 Emp 400's. I only plan on having 2 Oscars, 4 or 5 geos and maybe 2 catfish. The question is should I lose the Emps and go with a sump (cant' have both) or do I have enough filtration for my stock?

I have a feeling that the general consensus here is going to be that the filtration you have should at least be adequate, but obviously a sump would be better.

A sump will give you more flexibility in the future plus your overflows would be a waste of space in the tank.

True... but there already out of the tank, and drsfostersmith.com has the Fx5 for 239.00. I could get another one and have 2!!!!!!! But I should just suck it up and put the overflows back in...

2 fx5 imo would be ideal stuffed with bio since u already have 1. You could just use the one you have and be fine with regular vacing and wc.

I'd say the Fx5's is probably the most straight forward route if you're hesitant to put a sump in. It will be an overkill if anything, as I'm running 1 on a fairly heavily stocked 180, and it's fine.

oh, duh! I thought you meant you removed the bulkheads. If they are 1" or 3/4" bulkheads, use them to plumb in your fx-5 (s)!

I had the same tank about 1 1/2 years ago with a sump...it seemed like I was always fiddiling with it.
