toadfish

There are freshwater toadfish, depends on the species. I don't have experience with them though so I don't know about compatability

The "freshwater" toad fish is really a brackish fish. They can be kept in fresh water when young, but as they get older they require brackish to survive. Of all the fish you have, the clown knife is the only one that would struggle with much salt. For the others, you could get away with carefully coming up with a happy medium between fresh and brackish and then your toadfish (aka lionfish, stonefish) would be alright. They are a super cool fish.

Keep in mind, feeding might become difficult. They prefer live fish as they are a hunter, but they can be made to eat frozen, but with oscars and bichirs, frozen or live might not last long enough for your toadfish to get them. As for behavioral compatibility, you should be fine. The toadfish will hide out all day and only come out at night. this will protect him from the oscars. The toadfish is poisonous, however, and if one of your oscars were to take a bite or nibble, it could be fatal.

The toadfish aren't much of an issue in terms of compatibility afaik, as long as nothing is small enough to eat they are extremely passive. I have mine with a Senegal Bichir and it seems to be working alright, but my bichir has tried biting the stonefish a couple times... once because the stonefish snatched a feeder that the bichir was stalking and the bichir got pissed off, and once out of curiosity, I think. It didn't look like there was any damage from these instances, though, and most of the time the bichir pays no attention to the stonefish whatsoever.

@everlastace

At what age/length would you say it becomes more imperative to keep them in brackish? I have mine (two of them) in fw right now and they are about 3" long. I have had them for a bit over a week, and they look fine, but I might make my next tank brackish for their sake. I guess I'm trying to figure out what my time frame is; is their being kept in freshwater an immediate concern or more of an eventual requirement?

Also, what do you think about marine conditions for these fish? If, as I have read, ultimately marine salinity levels are best for them, do they need to be a certain age/length before going marine? I ask because I may be more interested in trying a marine tank than doing brackish, because there are so many more options available. In that case, my plan would be to use the new tank to acclimate them slowly to brackish, and then eventually increase it to marine levels, at which point I could add some live rock and a protein skimmer. Would that work?

In the wild, they are born in the freshwater deltas of rivers and over the first year they move closer to the ocean. With mine, I've made sure they were brackish by 1 year (5ish inches). I've heard that they can go marine, but I would wait till they are a year and a half or more and then make the switch very gradually and watch him closely.

If he's out eating and stealing things from your bicher then he's doin pretty good! Good luck!
