I have a male severum around 8-9" and a female around 5-6". I have had them living together since I got them both around 1.5". Recently the male became extremely aggressive and tore the female up pretty bad. I moved her into my growout tank so she could get better and as she got better she started to be aggressive towards my baby dats. So today I moved her back in with the male and it only took about 15 minutes before he had her beat into complete submission to where she was just hiding on top of the water. So I took the male and stuck him in my oscars tank for now. My question is, Is there anything I can do to keep this big b*stard severum from killing my female or should I just dump these guys and get fish that will defend themselves rather than just take a beating?

anyone have any advice? it seems like every time I post i get a bunch of views but nobody has anything to say.

give the female more places to hide, its possible that the 55 gallon is no longer big enough for the two of them

thanks. I tried giving her spots to hide but she never uses them. she usually just swims with the male until he starts being aggressive then she just tries to stay a couple inches away. it just seems like she is really dumb.

or that she wants to breed, maybe the male just can't take a hint

is there anything I can do to entice breeding or anything that may just curb the aggression? i put the tiger barbs in thinking that they would act as dithers so the severums wouldn't fight each other but that failed. maybe another cichlid would help with the aggression between the two?

I had to get rid of one of my severums because it was pissing off my one eyed severum, Not sure on the sexes, but I figured it was better to prevent any drama from happening (this is in a 150). Since the move, my one eyed has changed colors and is so much happier now. I moved our super red out due to him having a vision impairment, and I didn't want Popeye to turn on him.

Are you 100% on the sexes?

Dropping the tank temp a few degrees may slow him down a bit. Same with feeding a little more. The truth is that with severums, aggression is part of the breeding behaviour and males kill their partners sometimes. The only other thing I could suggest is a divider. I'm afraid you may have to separate them permanently.

I am not 100% but in a thread I posted pictures of both of them everyone who answered confirmed what I thought.
