No. The Nikon SB-800 has TTL (through the lens) metering. I have the flash on a sync cord and connected to the camera. I have used it...actually two others...as a slave using the camera flash as the master. I don't like the results as much as I do with a single flash.

that would help a lot. i did some really fast research and it seems the flash you use is mounted on the top of the camera, which kind of makes me wonder how you managed to get the flashes to come from the top without some kind of infrared controller of sorts. it would help to see what you are using

I will have to find and post the set up with the flash. I do have a set of studio lights that are a real pain in the butt to set up. Here's what that looks like:
