Today in the Fishroom ~ Albino heckelii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If they are true albino, you'd breed one to a regular heckelii and then breed one of those fry back to the albino parent.

Correct, statistically a cross between a carrier of the albino gene and an albino should produce 50% albino offspring, but this may only express this way when large numbers of offspring are compared. IOW it can be like tossing a coin in smaller spawns. Either way I would think that it shouldn't be too long before albino heckelli are being produced on US soil.

I agree with Mo - It's nice to see some new excitement in the hobby. I'm not a big fan of "new and shiny" but it does keep things moving forward. I was just saying, in another thread, that a spark is needed around here, and in the hobby in general. Great pics as usual Mo, and great conversation RD. This is the reason I have come here for years.

I typically don't find albino animals attractive but these guys look great.

I just wanted to post back that I saw these in person for the first time today, and I have to admit that they actually are really nice looking fish. I don't think that your pics do them justice, Mo. :) I love the "lipstick" look of their lips. A buddy of mine picked up a "pair" (not sure about that?) for $250, for the pair. Crazy prices, but I take back what I said previously about their looks. I really like them, and I'm now secretly hoping that they won't work out long term in my friends tank. Ha!

I agree they have great looks, but normal heckelli are one of the most beautiful SA american fish so the albino are kind of a turnoff. IDK just my opinion

I also saw albino Heckelli for the first time in my LFS (Bill's Wonderful World of Pet). There may be half a dozen of them, nearly full grown and housed in separate quarters, and selling for $100-140. They are so beautiful that even though I won't take them home, I can't resist taking a few pics of them. I don't know where Bill got his fish, but his store carries many Asian fish like Arrowana, Thai Silk FH, Electric Blue Acara and Rams. Although the pics aren't as good as MoJo's, the fish have long extended threads that MoJo's one has not developed yet.
