Today one in one of my tanks i noticed these...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the replies...

It's a nematoad. I am guessing that they were introduced from night crawlers that were gathered from outside...

I had a friend give a sample to someone and yesterday he called me at work to tell me that i had nematoads...

As far as the spots near the worm in the pictures.. my bad.. this tank is a temp tank for it's inhabitants... and i don't really clean the outside much since they are spashing about from time to time... I took a few pictures but they were dirty with water stains so i cleaned the glass and grabbed a rag to wipe the windex (ammonia free-lol) off.. that resulted in lint...

I have planeria in another tank that i use to feed baby dempseys...

I do 20% water changes daily because the tank is well stocked at the moment...

It is a bare bottom tank that is 48"x18"x20" that houses 3 jags 4, 5 and 6 inches, a sailfin pleco, a 6" JD, a 9" pike and a raphael catfish.

as far as filtration goes.. there is more then enough to handle the current bio-load.

Ammonia = 0
Nitrates = 20
Nitrites = 0
KH = 110
GH= 80
PH = 6.9

I do the water changes since i am cleaning the poop off the bottom... and figure 20% is good and now since i have the tank @ 7.0 ph. It is just fresh water and i just change it... fish like it.. Their colors are beautiful unless one is harrassing the other...

It's not planaria as it doens't have the triangular head. I know it's a bit after the fact but a surefire way to ID planaria is the head shape.

hey Leptar, were you in puppy center the other day and asked them? if so, small world...i was standing next to you when you did.

Definitely a nematode. Planaria are shaped like a fat arrow, and are very flat. They are harmless and fish usually enjoy eating them, so don't take any risky moves to kill them. I get the 'yuck' and 'ugly' views, but these worms are best dealt with, as mentioned, by light feeding. Some worms will always be present, but you'll probably never notice them.

It wasn't me.. I'm on the Rhody/Mass border looks like your in CT... kind of a hike for me... ;)

I haven't got rid of them yet... well atleast not to an acceptable level... the tank IMHO is a complete eye sore up close but not as it was before... I can see 7-8 of them now wiggling around at any given time...

I increased the temp to 81F and i added some "Aquarium Salt" i am feeding once every other day just enough... I also added some copper sulfate 1/2 the dosage to kill snails and let it sit in the tank for 2 days... i am doing daily water changes and while it helped it's still not a quick fix...
