it's so dark it's borderline BLOODY, Sir. lol Most use it as chum or baitfish
Its not that bad. The Vietnamese cook/serve these fish in a strong broth, and sushi restaurants marinade them and serves them nigiri style.
And of course, they are a ton of fun on rod n reel
I think the fact that it's not so great really pushes a lot of people away , and prevents them from eating one of the much healthier fish. Despite it's drawbacks, mackerel is highly nutritious, even for a fish....but the question is "Can you make it edible?" LOLNice catch. I tried mackerel in a sushi dish and the texture is not bad but the smell and taste threw me off. I couldn't do it.

macs good for crab bait, and fish bait.
I used to like them for sharks....when we get them up north occasionally in the summer, they work good for Striped Bass if you get the smaller ones and use them live on a big Striper hook, through the bottom-lip and out the nostril. You can use them as cut-bait, but when I have a few at my disposal, I prefer live bait over anything. big boys like Amberjacks, Cobia, Drum and tuna will smash them too.....especially TunaThey are great for King fish bait. I use a trolley rig and steel wiring with some hooks and send it out.
