Once they reach sexual maturity the breeding tube may continue to be present, even if they're not about to spawn. When they're ready to spawn you will see a noticeable change in the size and color (light pink if I remember correctly) I'm guessing its the same for other Pty species?

Here's (what I believe to be) the alpha mail of the tank, he spends most of the time guarding his cave.

His profile is must steeper and higher than what I perceive to be a number of females in the tank.
