Went across town today to visit the not so LFS. They claim to be the largest in the country and have just moved premises to a new and improved shop. It has been a long wait to see there new setup and although not yet complete, very impressive.
Talkin tanks I mentioned my FX5 on my 200. Only to be met with pure disgust and told that basically I dont have a filter on my tank. The store owner went on to describe that he would never sell one and pulled out diagrams to prove his theory. He was clearly passionate about his cause. I wasn't going to argue the point and basically took it all on board.
I do 40 to 50 percent water changes weekly and he rekons thats the only reason my fish are healthy and that I'm waisting water at a rapid rate.
I've never heard negative feedback on the FX5 and was quite taken a back. I only want to give my fish the best quality water I can and am now unsure about my setup.
Has any one else come across FX5 haters? This guy does have some serious experience under his belt and didn't need to do this. Leaves me wondering:screwy:

Said it was a glorified sponge filter that doesnt bio filter the water at all. Told me the filter princables 101. Which we all know. But in his opinion, water must first hit the bio balls, then go through carbon and lastly through a filter pad or fine sponge.
Pointed out at least five other brands that work this way. He was verging on rude, but his point was for the fishes heath and not a sales pitch which Is why I got a bit worried.
To me there were some points that didnt make sense, but I thought I'd turn to the trusty and always opinionated MFKers to help.

Ignore him. He probably bashes them because he doesn't sell them.

Whether or not it runs through a sponge first or last makes no difference to the effectiveness of the bio filtration. There are plenty of other filters that work the same way. Rena XP series runs all water through sponges before it gets to the bio media. He's probably talking about HOB filters, in which, there would be no comparison.

you want the clear water to get too you bio-balls and ceramic rings otherwise you are just creating hiding spots for the dirt, that is why the filter pads go first to catch all the poo and dirt imo anyway.

Agree. I would never put Bio first, not only does it make for hiding spots, you don't want it to clog. You should never clean bio media, and if you have it before the mech filter it will end up needing cleaned.

Actually as long as you have mechanical filtration first the order of bio media, (fresh) carbon, and sponge won't matter. The LFS guy sounds like a Eheim sales rep. He's either getting great margins on Eheim and crappy ones on Fluval or he's an inflexible ass having been taught a certain way and any deviation is tanamount to insulting his mother. The main Aquarium store in Mass has the same thing. The owner is the most odd ball infelxible person I know.
