Told my FX5 is no good

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not the fx5's biggest fan but his argument doesn't make sense... a glorified sponge filter? you get the bio filtration depending on what media you use... was he upset because it doesn't come with bio media? lol

i would always urge caution when speaking to the trade , as even shops i have good favourable long term relationships with will contradict themselves over time.
On several occassions i have been told that the latest product is going to make all other units obsolete, only to be told three months later that they were a waste of time.
as far as filtration is concerned - if you keep large fish its simple BIG = sump+pond pump to drive it + air or powerheads as back up.

Be wary of anyone who holds an extreme opinion and who is not willing to entertain reasonable arguments.

"You basically don't have a filter on your tanks" This is silly. The FX5 is a great filter, as can be seen by it's general popularity around here.

Oh and news flash, sponges ARE bio filtration as well as mech. IMO it's difficult to get a better balance between bio and mech than a sponge. The only trouble with them is that you have to disturb the BB to get them clean.

Said it was a glorified sponge filter that doesnt bio filter the water at all. Told me the filter princables 101. Which we all know. But in his opinion, water must first hit the bio balls, then go through carbon and lastly through a filter pad or fine sponge.
Pointed out at least five other brands that work this way. He was verging on rude, but his point was for the fishes heath and not a sales pitch which Is why I got a bit worried.
To me there were some points that didnt make sense, but I thought I'd turn to the trusty and always opinionated MFKers to help.

Oh nonsense. I have two FX5s on my 350 (only foam and bio) and my water quality is great...if my Dats could talk, they would back me up. Having said that, there is no question that the design of the FX5 is quirky and this does tend to invite skepticism on the part of certain individuals. Furthermore, if you consider the internal volume of the canister, the biomedia capacity is compromised in favor of mechanical. IMO...if you have a large tank and you want to move a lot of water and you ONLY need/want the white sponges supplied with the FX5 for mechanical filtration, followed by biomedia in the central chambers, the FX5 is a very solid performer for the money.

see you see my comment FOR Fx5's all day long .. but never say anything bad about other filters .. i am PRO Fx5 .. but not anti anything .. i think for the money and size they are worth it .. and other filters cost so much more for equal or less ... but for the money i think they are the best canister filters on the market right now ... but if you want eheim by all means go for it .. i dont have any bad things to say other then the price ..

now if i said they are JUNK ... then i am just a fanboy .. and fanboys would tell you a hunk of dog crap is the best filter in the world if thats what they use ...

Does the store carry Fluval or hagen products at all?

If he doesn't he's probably just bitter by not being an authorized dealer.

If he does, well then everyone's entitled to there opinion.

Could you possibly post the Name and address of this LFS?

Its just a scare tactic to try to sell you more filters bro.

I suppose (Don't shoot me here) the ammonia must be through the roof on my tank since I only change the water one a month or so. Fx5 on a 55 Gal with two 7" Jack Dempseys and about 12 african Mbuna cichlids.

Its very tough sometimes talking about something when the other person in the conversation absolutely hates what your using or disagrees with you. I run in that all the time especially with my carved concrete retainer walls, patios and water features here in the north east. No one has seen the process before so they don't believe in it.

I think i know what that lfs guy is talking about... or not.. because what u mention seems like he's just talking about the oversized sponage filtration of the unit.. but not the bad things about an FX-5

There are actually some MFKers here on this forum that do not use and have bad experience with FX-5s....

If you look in the FX-5 vs. EHEIM pro III series link you'll understand...
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68458

Basically, the issue is the long run 24/7 operation cost of the FX5, it uses more wattage, 50watt vs other brands who uses less wattage. In addition, there are some design flaws in the FX5, specifically the hose issue, the motor and the GPH flow of the unit..

I suggest you read that link carefully to understand what i mean.. I too was going to invest in an FX-5 but changed my mind..

The link gives an insite on MFK members experience of using FX5 for 3+ years experience...

hope it help..
