Tomacichla Asfracii Growout

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow. That is darn spendy!

I don't know what the first ones here costed, but they must have been even more expensive. Someone had to fly all the way to Panama, catch them, do all the paper work etc. Ultimately, though, they share the fate of many rare large cichlids in the aquarium hobby. The rather small market for them fills up pretty quickly, and then nobody wants them anymore.
Only one specialized LFS has them and the price is low.
60€ for a 10" fish....

Good luck with your fish! I hope you can help re-establish them in the aquarium hobby.

Panama has very become restrictive about randomly letting their natural resources out of the country.
And this species is restricted to only a few river systems, in eastern Panama,
not at all close to where I live, so it would be quite the trek and adventure for me to access them, bring them back alive, even though I live in Panama.
When I had them the 1st time in the US, the restrictions getting them out, were much more lax.
The 2nd time I had them, they were catpive bred in the US, but many tirned out to be deformed, so many had to be culled.

I considered myself lucky to get one nornal individual among the dozen I picked up (and I spoke a number of aquarists who ended up mith mostly mutants) fro the same batch
You are very lucky to end up with quality individuals

duanes duanes do you have a hypothesis for the high number of deformities in the fry?

Way too many variables.
Water composition for the spawning pair.
Too hard? Too soft? Where I live water is quite hard.
IMG_3372.jpeg
aberrant pH?
Where I live in Panama, pH averages 8 or higher, nitrates undetectable

IMG_4815.jpeg
Not enough tannins?

Since the fry being sold to meb at the time, were only half to 1¨, diet would proably ´not ´be a factor. but...
Diet fed to parents?
Too high in protein?
Not enough algae?
Particular plant or algal source endemic to the Rio Guabo/ Rio Guaramo

Flow rate?
Do developing fry need certain flows?

Just too many ifs.

I have learned that feeding a low fat diet is signifcant to these fish and feeding a more herbivore diet as well. These are F1 fish with the parents being collected by Chris Craig in Panama so I am confident there won’t be any issues with these fish

Little more to add to this thread. Here is the food I’ll at least be starting them on for a while. My goal is to really bring out some reds in these fish and keeping them on a balanced low fat diet with mostly a herbivore diet since they feed on a lot of algae in the wild. The red color enhancer pellets is something I did with my discus and it significantly made a difference in their overall color so was interested how this would work out with these specific fish.
