The river I fish is the St.joe I dont think we stock kings anymore but we stock the hell out of coho and steelhead. We have an amazing coho run last year. depending on the weather our runs start towards the end of August. Last year the last weekend of August I was catching kings in the river already. So that would mean that the had been in the river for at least a week so they should be starting.
I really dont mind the declining salmon population as now we have a booming smallmouth and walleye population. Not to mention the comeback of the two giant natives the lake sturgeon and the Lake trout. I think the Great lakes are changing for the better and I wouldnt be surprised if they cut all salmon stocking in the next 10-20 years. I think they will keep stocking steelhead and browns and I would love to see them start stocking another MI native that has disapeared from the area, the spotted musky.
Don't they die though? They say around here we stock steelhead because they live longer and don't die after spawning. We'll they don't die in the creek...they are all caught and leave in the trunk of people from pittsburgh.fobrinkle;3395419; said:The DNR still raises Kings at the Matawan Hatchery. They get the eggs and milk from the salmon at the manistee weir. I got the eggs for my salmon in the classroom project from the hatchery last fall.
Same difference.yes but the St. joe I dont think gets any of these fish I knew we still stocked kings in some other areas.fobrinkle;3395419; said:The DNR still raises Kings at the Matawan Hatchery.
