Everytime I look at the JD I switch my mind regarding the gender.
On the gill plate it's blue dotting - not the heavy splotching that I see on females. However on males they have no dotting below their eyes - and as you can see from when he was younger, he didn't have these blue dots below the eyes either.
If this JD ends up being female, then this is just my luck for growing out SA/CA Cichlids - seems I am always heavy in females. If this JD isn't male then I have a confirmed little/small male GT, and maybe a Regani that is male (heard males/females look the exact same, can only tell by venting) and then rest of the tank is female.
Been doing some searching in the media lounge, and here are two other JDs (males) I have found with some coloration around the gill plates.
Yes but yours doesn't have the body spangling of a male... it's more concentrated in the gill plate which leads me to believe it's a female but it could be anything... I'd vent it to be 100% sure.

Thats a female JD. Looks to be a bit short-bodied too if the angle of the picture is correct. There are some colorful females, but males have bigger and more spangles around body. Your female JD is a late bloomer. Your 5/31 picture shows a female. Fins show female as well.
