too good to be true?

If your sump floods when the power is out you made it incorrectly
I have never had any problem with my (DIY) sump. I shut it down every time I do a water change and it never overflows. It is a wet/dry set which I prefer as they are very quiet and the tank is in my bedroom. I have never had a canister filter, so I cant comment on them one way or another. But I like the ease of maintenance of a sump. I do have an old HOB in the garage if I ever need it. I have been considering setting up a smaller tank for breeding feeders.

I've had HOB's, internals and canisters and canisters are by far my least favorite to work with. They are very efficient and can hold lots of media but having to pull them out, pop the top and take out all the baskets of media is quite a pain and time consuming. I like being able to pull the cover off the HOB and remove the sponge/media for a quick rinse and then slap it right back in. The internals I've had have been really easy to work with. I just have to detach the filter from the powerhead part and remove the sponge/media for rinsing.

I also have a 55 gallon sump set up for my 220 that I'm looking forward to using. I think that it will be the easiest of all.

there all sold out of fx6 in local Petsmarts so I called that fish place and not only did they match the Petsmart price they are also having a 10% off sale so I got that also! I ordered 2. I hope I like it cause I really like the 3 emperor 400's. Do I need to replace anything in the fx6 or just rinse the stuff out and reuse it?

You clean them in tank water once a month and replace filter media (foam, not rings) once every 6months.

I've had all three, sumps cans/internal, hob, and for canisters I stick behind eheims. I love their pro 3 models (all of them) and their 2260/62. I have had good luck with their pro 2s as well even though they seemed to be the model of highest failure. Cans are good, they have a good media capacity as well as mechanical capacity. They are not that bad to clean, people make it sound far worse then it actually is. I've had more problems cleaning HOB filters then canisters. They are designed for easy use with their quick connect shut off valves and their latches that hold the pump down. The only down fall to cans is they have to be assembled perfectly after cleaning or else they will leak but you should always keep them in a rubber made anyways. One eheim I had leaked constantly so I kept taking the lid off and putting it back on making sure it was perfect. Finally I realized there was a little pebble in the o-ring area that was causing the leak. Sumps are still the best. Huge bio capacity huge mechanical capacity 100% fail proof unless the sump tank leaks and 100% custom.

I have never run a canister filter. I was always a fan of HOB incase something went wrong and you weren't home it would drain the tank all over your floor but I think I'm gonna try this
It would not if you drill a small hole in the intake pipe, about an inch below the water level.
Essential hack for canister filters!
