im preping to get my 500 gal tank drilled. my plan was to have many holes run the back of the tank. could to many weaken it to failer? if it matters my plan is for he holes to be 1inch under water level. im also having a 4 inch hole drilled half way down for water changes.

im always open to suggestions.

why drill more holes than you need?

assuming they aren't all in a row it should be ok, as long as you don't go crazy and make your tank in to swiss cheese.

edit: keep in mind thats just my opinion on the row thing(it still may be ok), I have seen tanks with many holes drilled on the sides to create a closed loop for water flow.

would a 4" hole create too much suction and potentially pull stuff out including fish?

of course-the more holes you drill the weaker it gets.Dont get nuts-its not necessary anyway.

that is definitely a bigger whole then i would use, but I don't have experience in the 500 gallon range. I would use a screen on it for sure, as a fish that gets to close will probably be slurped up.

i was gonna screen up all my holes. i never read how many holes so my plan was to line them on the back so maby 1 every foot would work?

its so i get equal skimming across the tank. mgk so ur saying off set the holes? howm many inch do u suggest putting between holes.
I would have a foot atleast between each one.
I believe the higher your drill the holes in the tank the less chance of catastrophic failure there would be, since there is less pressure on the glass higher up.
