too much filtration a bad thing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Because it doesnt get trapped. You take it out and clean it before your filter turns into a nitrate factory. At least you should. The point is simply that the UGF is much more likely to trap stuff. If you can clean it well and have no issues with stuff getting trapped then it wont create any more nitrates (or if you never clean out your other filter then it would be the same there too).

Yes it does get trapped, this is how a filter works, are you telling me that everyone should clean there canister filter on a weekly basis? A properly maintained undergravel filter will produce no more nitrates then any other properly maintained biological filter.

I actually have 2 canister filters hooked up to my UGF in my 60 goldfish tank. I also have another canister filter and a AC 200 hooked up to it. It seems to be working great. I vacuum my gravel quite thoroughly although I only do one side of the tank each time. Im convinced that all the crap is not just getting hung up in the gravel and rotting because I get plenty of poo in my filters. Maybe thats because of the strong suction of the canisters? I dont think it would be as effective with bubblers or something weak. I really like the UGF though because it keeps crap from floating all over the water and the aesthetics keep my wife happy. Pretty tank = happy wife = more tanks!
