My gf has always loved my Rift Cichlid tank and now that I am getting the 6-7 ft’r for a Jardini Arowana (have another post about that) she is getting really interested. Her Bday is coming up soon and I want to get her this Aqueon 38-40 gal (can’t remember) setup at the lfs. It comes already with the normal accessories and a Aqueon 30-45 gal 200GPH hang on filter.

She is just as fascinated with filtration as I am so I thought I might take it a step up for her. I have Penn Plax Cascade canister filter laying around that I got a while back and never put to use. It is meant for up to 30 gallons and does 115 GPH. I was thinking about running that along with the hang on that comes with the tank.

Question being, is that too much filtration, or “the more the merrier”?

You will be fine running the 200 gph HOB and the 115 gph canister both on the 40 gal set up...

Gracias!

Depends on what she keeps in the 40g. Guppies + around 315 gph might be to strong. But yea depedning on what you keep it should be fine, i had a 350gph canister and 330gph HOB on a 30g.

A few African Cichlids. She loves 'em.

when i moved guppies and angels from my 10g growout, both guppies got stressed, stopped eating, and died but angels were and still are fine. so yea make sure u dont get too much flow rate :O
