too much heat?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A heat pad works kind of like a stovetop coil. It forces through electricity through a network of wires that are made of something that's a poor conductor of electricity, so a lot of the electricity is converted to heat energy.

I've never used supplemental heat for my corn snake, and in the winter, the house sometimes gets into the mid-fifties at night. Assuming your house doesn't get much below that at night, I'd say you don't need any heat pads or lights.

I use heat pads for all my animals. They work very well. Heat lamps dry out the tank.

ok first off corns dont need extra heat but a little is good a 15w heat pad in 1/3 of the tank
away from the water dish is good as long as its a glass enclosure so the heat dissapates a bit.
the best thing for a corn is a std bulb in a corner on the outside of the tank with log under it to provide a warm spot this gives him the sense of day and night and that its warm so he wont think its witer and he wont get lazy..

Personally, any of the US colubrids I've kept, I've used a UTH and rarely any lamps. I do this mainly because the bottom of the tank is where the snake is going to spend the majority of its time and while the average temps inside a tank is usually enough w/o any additional lighting, extra belly heat is probably welcome, especially for digesting meals. Obviously, placing it under one side of the tank is recommended so the snake has the option of a gradient.

I can't speak for everyone, but like Z-Trip, I've been used various types/brands of UTHs for years and have never had any issues. The thing to remember is to raise the tank somehow so A.) the tank doesn't pinch the cord of the UTH and B.) there's air flow under the tank so heat doesnt build up and crack the bottom.

When I had my ball python, I had a heating pad under one end of the 55 gallon tank he was in. No other heat source.
Just the heating pad, a water dish and a house made out of a box turned upside down.
