Took the EBJD Plunge... couple questions.

The 55 gal runs your typical 7-10 nitrate with 30% weekly changes. I'll put him in there if he can get the food ok. The penguin tetras are pretty much mental though. Total wackos that like to pick and prod at other fish and horde food. Last thing I want to do though is have to overfeed to make sure EBJD gets what he needs, that would just make my nitrate higher and require more water changes.

Nice EBJD. Cool markings. Mine was killed by my salvini at 2"

Hope yours makes it. I'd put him in the 55 too. IME they don't seem to be as brave/confrontational as the normal JD or GT i had him in with. But I've seen many posts here that they can more than hold their own so I guess it depends on the fish. Hope you got a mean one :D

Well, if the way he treats the cory cats is any indication, I think I may have. He chases them all over the place shoving them out of his way. Heaven forbid if one were to wander into his little miniature cave!

To avoid stunting, you have to progress it as soon as possible.

When you notice it's large enough to not get eaten in the next step up, then move it.

A boosted water change schedule will help, but don't expect it to go anywhere too fast.

Actually I've seen some pretty amazing things happen even in 10g's with an awesome water change schedule. Not saying it won't grow faster in the 55g but it won't exactly stunt right away in the 10g right now as long as you're changing out water often.

I'm taking all the advice very seriously and appreciate it ALL. I think I'm going to let him stay in the 10 gallon with 25% water changes every other day for about the next week or so. He's acting so comfortable and happy in the 10 gallon. i just got him two days ago and don't think that changing his environment and giving him more new tankmates is something I want to put him through again already. I think I'd like to just give him a week to learn my "schedule and habits" before doing another world change on him. After that, I'll go ahead and add him to the 55.

Lol, if it's properly maintained in the 10 gallon, it can hit 4" without stunting at all. My Jag went to 5" in my 10 gallon and he wasn't stunted. I did 50% water changes daily and fed him like crazy and he grew to that size from 1.5" in less than 3 months. Then he was moved to a larger set up and almost killed my other fish in there so I sold him. But the key to fast growth would be water changes. Continuous water changes, the more new water that goes in each day, the faster the growth. =) I want to set up an auto water changer that runs 24/7. New water always coming in and old water always going out. But yeah, don't feed that jd anything like worms and stuff. It might get bloat. XP

I have 3 at the moment, and ive grown 2 out prior 2 these 3. I find NLS to be the best staple food for growth other then that have a varied diet, and 75 percent of the water should be changed a week(not all at once). They should be fine in that 55. I have my 3 in a 30 gallon high with 2 indo dats and a red headed severum without any problems. Increasing your filtration will also help you keep things clean.

Hmm.. I feed my JD and GT worms a couple times a week. They bulked up fast when I fed them twice a day 4 days a week over the winter. I've never had a problem yet but will pay more attention now I guess
